Miami Diving Finishes Up at AT&T National Championships
Aug. 14, 2011
LOS ANGELES – University of Miami female diver Lindsay Lester wrapped up a successful meet for the Hurricanes diving team on Sunday at the AT&T National Championships inside Spieker Aquatics Center on the campus of UCLA. Lester finished ninth in the finals of the women’s 3-meter springboard.
Lester, a 5-foot-8 sophomore from San Jose, Calif., took part in her first-ever women’s 3-meter springboard national finals, coming in ninth with a score of 256.00. The Willow Glen High School alum qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympic trials on Friday night by advancing to Sunday’s finals in the 3-meter event.
She tallied her best scores on her fourth and fifth dives, respectively.
Lester’s highest score came on the strength of a Back 2 ½ Somersault Tuck to score her a judges’ award of 54.60. Her final dive – an Inward 2 ½ Somersault Tuck – netted her a score of 52.65.
University of Miami diving head coach Randy Ableman was happy with the national championships performance of both current UM divers – Samuel Dorman and Lindsay Lester – in addition to former Cane and two-time national champion Brittany Viola.
“It was a great meet for the whole team and a breakthrough for Sam and Lindsay,” said Ableman. “With Brittany winning the national title on Saturday, it just couldn’t have gone much better for us.
“Our next focus is getting back into the NCAA season. So, we want to try and place as high as we can and possibly win an NCAA title this year. At the same time, we want to prepare for the Olympic trials because Brittany, Sam, Lindsay, Carrie [Dragland] and possibly Thea [Vock] will participate in the trials.”
The 2011-12 University of Miami swimming & diving schedule will be released later this month by swimming head coach Christie Shefchunas along with Ableman.
