Aug. 4, 2011

Coral Gables, Fla. – Former Hurricanes baseball player and Adalberto José Jordán, a 1984 University of Miami Law graduate, was recently nominated by President Barack Obama to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Affectionately known as “Bert” during his playing days at the “U”, Jordan lettered one season in 1981 for the Canes in baseball, playing for legendary head coach Ron Fraser. During that season, he played in 14 games and batted .200 with a double and two RBI. From his infield position defensively, he posted two putouts and three assists.

Judge Jordán obtained a B.A. magna cum laude from the University of Miami in 1984, his J.D. summa cum laude from University of Miami School of Law in 1987, and has taught as an adjunct professor at Miami Law since 1990.

Judge Jordán has served as a district judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida in Miami since 1999.

“Judge Adalberto José Jordán will bring an unwavering commitment to fairness and judicial integrity to the federal bench,” President Obama said. “His impressive legal career is a testament to the kind of thoughtful and diligent judge he will be on the Eleventh Circuit. I am honored to nominate him today.”

In his only season with the Canes in 1981, Jordán was a part of a UM team that went 61-10 in advancing to the College World Series. Miami won the NCAA South Regional and its first game in the CWS, but was eventually eliminated in losses to Oklahoma State and Texas.

After graduating from law school, he served as a clerk for the Honorable Thomas A. Clark of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit from 1987 to 1988. The following year, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Sandra Day O’Connor of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Two years later, in 1989, Judge Jordán joined the Miami law firm of Steel Hector & Davis LLP (now Squire Sanders & Dempsey) as a litigation associate, where he would eventually specialize in appellate practice and become a partner in 1994. Later that year, he joined the United States Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Florida, where he served as an assistant United States attorney in the appellate division and handled criminal and civil appeals for the government.

In 1998 Judge Jordán served as special counsel to the United States Attorney for legal policy and became an appellate division chief in the office.

Since his appointment to the District Court bench in 1999, Judge Jordán has presided over nearly 200 trials ranging from civil and criminal matters.
