Canes Open 2011 Season at Home Against Florida
July 26, 2011
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami first-year head coach Tom Anagnost announced the 2011 women’s soccer schedule on Tuesday and the slate includes 10 matches against teams that advanced to the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
“We are all extremely excited about our upcoming fall schedule and the mighty challenges each team will bring,” said Anagnost. “We will always be playing the very best teams in the country both in and out of conference.
“Seven of the teams we play finished in the Top 10 in the country last year and 10 of them were ranked in the top 25. Each game, starting with our very first contest, will be very difficult and will test us in every way.”
Just like in 2009, the Canes will open at home against rival Florida on Friday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. Anticipation will again be high like it was two seasons ago when a crowd of 2,277 fans shattered the school’s attendance record.
Two days later Miami will face Monmouth for just the second time in program history and the first since the 2005 season. The Canes then head out west to face BYU and Utah Valley State on Aug. 26 and 28 respectively.
BYU fell victim in the penalty round to UCLA in its tournament opener.
The Canes return to Florida as they host Duquesne on Sept. 4, travel across the state to face Florida Gulf Coast on Sept. 6 and then open Atlantic Coast Conference play in Cobb Stadium on Sept. 15 against Clemson at 7 p.m.
Miami’s longest road trip of the year – a three game stretch – begins at Navy in Annapolis, Md. on Sept. 17, then continues to Durham, N.C. where UM takes on Duke on Sept. 22. The trip concludes with the reigning ACC champs Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Sept. 25.
Duke and Wake Forest both advanced to the 2010 NCAA Tournament with Duke reaching the third round before falling to Oklahoma State. The Demon Deacons fell to UC Irvine in the second round.
NC State and North Carolina then pay a visit to South Florida on Sept. 29 and Oct. 2 respectively. In each of its last two visits to Coral Gables, UNC has been turned away by the Canes 1-0, in 2007 and 2009. In last year’s NCAA Tournament, the Tar Heels lost to eventual national champion Notre Dame in the third round.
After a match in Blacksburg, Va. against Virginia Tech on Oct. 7, Miami will host Boston College and Maryland on Oct. 13 and 16 respectively. Boston College advanced further in the 2010 College Cup than any other ACC squad, succumbing to Stanford in the national semifinal.
Maryland lost to its rival Georgetown on penalty kicks in the NCAA Tournament’s second round.
The Canes’ final two matches of the season come at Florida State and at Virginia on Oct. 23 and 27. The Seminoles fell to Stanford in the national quarterfinals while the Cavaliers dropped it second round contest to Ohio State.
The conference’s top eight programs at the end of the regular season will head to Cary, N.C. for the ACC Tournament, Oct. 30 – Nov. 6.
The University of Miami is excited to announce a new season ticket package that will include two (2) adult and (3) youth tickets to all home volleyball and soccer events in the 2011 season.
