Watch List Week Continues With Washington & Forston
July 8, 2011
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — University of Miami defensive lineman Marcus Forston and offensive lineman Brandon Washington were named to the 2011 preseason watch list for the Outland Trophy, which is given annually to the best interior lineman in college football by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
Forston enters his junior year after starting 12 of 13 games last season, recording 37 tackles including 12 tackles for loss (second most on the team), three quarterback sacks and an interception. This isn’t the first time the defensive lineman has been recognized by the FWAA. In 2008, he was named to the FWAA Freshmen All-American First Team.
Washington enters his junior season after finishing 2010 with the second most tackles on the team (56). Last season, the offensive lineman was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Offensive Line of the Week twice after both the Virginia Tech and Duke games and was also an All-ACC First Team selection.
If awarded, Forston or Washington would become the third Hurricane to be honored with the award after Bryant McKinnie (2001) and Russell Maryland (1990). If granted, the award would also give Miami the most all-time Outland Trophy award recipients in the ACC with three. UM is currently tied for first with the University of Maryland for most Outland Trophy winners in the ACC with two each.
Miami ranks first among ACC schools on the preseason watch list with two selections. Seven ACC players total were selected for the 65-person list.
The Outland Trophy, presented annually since 1946, is the third oldest award in college football. The Outland Trophy is named after the late John Outland, a turn-of-the-century All-America lineman at Penn and Kansas.
Washington, Forston and the rest of the Hurricanes will open their 2011 season at Maryland on Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. on ESPN. For season tickets call 1-800-Go-Canes or purchase online through HurricaneSports.com.
