Miami Baseball Headed to Gainesville Regional
May 30, 2011
Coral Gables, Fla. – The No. 18 University of Miami baseball team will travel to the Gainesville [Fla.] Regional for the NCAA Baseball Tournament, beginning Friday, June 3, at Noon. For UMiami, this is an NCAA-record 39 consecutive years reaching the Field of 64 for baseball.
For the third time in as many years, the road to Omaha leads through Gainesville for the Hurricanes (36-21).
Miami collected the No. 2 seed in the Gainesville [Fla.] Regional; joining top-seed and No. 2 overall seed host University of Florida Gators (45-16), as well as Manhattan (24-17) and first-day opponent Jacksonville (36-22). The Hurricanes will play JU on Friday at Noon at McKethan Stadium on the UF campus in a televised Regional on ESPNU.
UM leads the all-time series against the JU Dolphins, 79-19, including two wins over Jacksonville in the 2009 Gainesville [Fla.] Regional. Against Manhattan, Miami is 5-1 all-time, with a series victory over the Jaspers last year in Coral Gables. As for the host Gators, UM leads the series 123-102-1, but Florida has won the previous six contests – including a series sweep in Gainesville earlier this season when the Canes were without the presence of head coach Jim Morris who was hospitalized with surgery.
Last year, Miami traveled to the Gainesville [Fla.] Super Regional, falling in back-to-back games, while also being eliminated from the Gainesville Regional in 2009. The Gainesville Regional is matched up against the Atlanta [Ga.] Regional with the winners playing each other in a Super Regional.
Seven Atlantic Coast Conference teams – including three of the top five national seeds – will be among the 64-team field when the 2011 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship gets under way with Regional play on Friday.
The seven ACC teams selected to this year’s NCAA field matches the SEC for the most from any conference. The Big 12 and Pac-10 each placed six teams in the field.
The ACC placed a league-record eight teams in the 2010 NCAA Championship and also saw seven teams make the field in the 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009. This marks the 10th straight year that at least five ACC teams have been selected for NCAA postseason play.
Total NCAA postseason appearances (counting this season) for this year’s ACC participating teams are as follows: Florida State 49, Miami 40, Clemson 36, Georgia Tech 27, North Carolina 26, NC State 24 and Virginia 10.
NCAA Regionals, which will consist of four-team double-elimination tournaments at 16 campus sites, will get under way Friday (June 3) and run through Monday (June 6) as necessary. The eight regional winners will advance to Super Regional play, again at campus sites, June 10-13. Those eight winners will then move on the 65th Men’s College World Series, set for June 18-29 at Omaha, Neb.
