STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Miami’s fifth-ranked doubles team of Bianca Eichkorn and Anna Bartenstein lost in the NCAA Doubles Championship Round of 16 in a three-set defeat at the hands of Washington’s 13th-ranked Venise Chan and Denise Dy Friday night at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

With the loss, the Hurricanes season – and Eichkorn’s record-breaking career – came to a close.

“Bianca’s career has been defined by so many positives, but unfortunately on a night like tonight we played a solid team in Washington and came up a little short,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “Bianca has meant so much to this program. She came in with class, she is going out with class and our program will be a stronger program for years to come because of her presence.”

After going into a third set, Miami went up 5-3 and had two match points but the Huskies battled back, taking that set and using the momentum to take the next three to claim the 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 win.

“I think some weaknesses that we have had all year long were magnified tonight,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “When you are on a big stage and you are playing to become an All-American doubles player, we can’t ignore our weaknesses. They need to be addressed going into next season. They need to be improved upon so that when we come back here, they aren’t an issue.”

The teams battled back and forth throughout the first set until the Canes broke serve to go up 6-5 before holding serve despite trailing love-40.

In the second, Miami fell behind 3-1 and was never able to recover, as UW pulled away to take a 6-2 frame and force the third and deciding set.

After both teams held serve to three-all in the third set, the Hurricanes broke serve and then held to take a 5-3 lead. From there, unfortunately, it was all Washington as Chan and Dy prevailed in the end to move into the quarterfinal round.

Eichkorn and Bartenstein closed out the season with an overall record of 32-5 together in doubles play. The tandem went 25-3 in dual match play, 15-4 against ranked opponents and despite the loss, won 20 of their last 22 matches to close out their run together.

Individually, Eichkorn leaves Miami as the program’s all-time winningest singles player with 133 career singles victories.
