CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field team will open competition Thursday at the NCAA East Preliminary Round at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington, Ind.

Three women, Ti’erra Brown, Takecia Jameson and Thandi Stewart will be competing in the 400m hurdles at 3:30 p.m. Brown and Jameson each earned All-America honors last season in the 400m hurdles when Brown was the national runner-up and Jameson placed seventh.

There are six heats of eight hurdlers in the qualifying round. The top three from each heat plus the next six best times will advance to the Friday’s quarterfinal round at 7 p.m. From there, the top 3 times in each heat plus the next three best times will advance to the NCAA National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

However, the day will start for the Canes with Nicole Cummings, when she competes in the long jump at 1 p.m. The freshman from Peekskill, N.Y. reached her best mark of the season at the ACC Championships (6.03m, 19-09.50).

Each of the 48 jumpers will have three attempts and if they are among the top 16 after those attempts, they will be awarded three addition jumps. The top 12 student-athletes will then advance to the championships.

Brown and Jameson will also compete in the 100m hurdles on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Just 30 minutes later, junior Devon Hill will race in the 110m hurdles. Hill won this year’s ACC Championship in the event.

Earlier on Friday, senior Megan Novinger will be competing in the high jump at 1 p.m. The Miami native reached a season-best mark of 1.75m (5-08.75) at the Hurricane Invitational. The top 12 jumpers advance to Des Moines.
