Weber Named ITA Southeast Region Assistant of the Year
May 16, 2011
Coral Gables, Fla… University of Miami assistant men’s tennis coach C.J. Weber has been named the Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
In five seasons as an assistant coach on Mario Rincon’s staff, Weber has helped guide the Canes to four NCAA Tournament appearances – including a trip to the second round this season – and has helped four players earn nine All-America honors.
“Being recognized for an award like this is a real honor,” said Weber. “But to me, it is more of a reflection of all the hard work of those around me – especially that of Mario, [volunteer assistant] Laurence Tieleman, [strength & conditioning coach] Andrew Klich and [sports psychologist] Dr. Ruben Perczek. And without the determination of the team, being recognized like this is simply impossible.”
In 2011, the Hurricanes went 15-9 and were ranked as high as No. 23, with 10 wins over ranked programs – including victories over six NCAA Tournament teams Wake Forest, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Nebraska (in first round competition).
In addition, Weber helped three Hurricanes – Eduardo Pavia, Carl Sundberg and freshman Gabriel Flores – to 20-plus singles wins this season.
“C.J. works very hard and has been instrumental in the success of our program over the last five years,” said Rincon. “He has provided loyal support to me, and has always been there to assist in all matters pertaining to our program.”
In addition to working closely with Rincon in player development and match preparation, Weber also assists with video instruction, recruiting, equipment management and travel coordination.
A 2004 graduate of Eastern Illinois, the Academic All-American and 2004 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year was also a three-time all-conference selection.
