Gainesville, Fla… The No. 27 University of Miami men’s tennis team fell to eighth-ranked Florida, 4-0, to close its season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.

After inclement weather initially pushed the regional final – scheduled for a 3 p.m. start on Saturday – back six hours, the Gators jumped out to the 1-0 lead with doubles wins at No. 1 and 2. Midway through the first set of singles competition, the rain returned and play was suspended until Sunday morning.

Today, Florida (20-8) picked up where it left off and used three straight-sets wins at No. 1, 2 and 6 to clinch the regional final and a Round of 16 berth.

“Florida is very strong at every position and they’re playing with a lot of confidence right now,” said head Miami coach Mario Rincon. “It hurts to be out of the tournament and for the season to end.

“But I’m proud of our season and what we have accomplished this year.”

The Hurricanes close their 2011 season at 15-9 and with their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in six seasons. Under Rincon, Miami is now 6-5 in postseason play.
