Eichkorn Sets Wins Record But Miami Falls in ACC Semifinals
April 24, 2011
CARY, N.C. – University of Miami senior Bianca Eichkorn set a new school record for career singles victories but the Hurricanes were eliminated from the ACC Championships in a 4-2 loss to second-seeded North Carolina late Saturday night at the Cary Tennis Park. Miami (18-6) will now await its NCAA selection when the field is announced on May 3. Down 3-0, the Canes’ comeback attempt started with Eichkorn’s record-breaking victory as the seventh-ranked senior took down 11th-ranked Zoe De Bruycker, 6-3, 7-6, in the No. 1 singles position. The win was Eichkorn’s 132nd, one more than her former teammate Laura Vallverdu’s previous mark of 131 that was set just a season ago. Before her win, North Carolina jumped out by taking the doubles point and the first two singles matches at No. 4 and No. 6. Then, after Eichkorn’s win, momentum went the way of the Hurricanes as Gabriela Mejia rallied to force a third set at No. 3 while 46th-ranked Anna Bartenstein battled for a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 2 to pull the Canes a little closer. In the end, unfortunately, the Heels held strong and prevailed in the end, as Shinaan Featherston picked up a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 3. “I was really proud of the girls’ effort today,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “I think they left everything out on the court but UNC was just a little bit better than us. “Getting off to a little bit of a slow start in doubles didn’t help us,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “When you play teams like this you have to get off to a good start and you have to play clean tennis. In a couple spots, I think we had the ability to close out sets and close out games or take the lead over in the match and change the momentum and we weren’t able to do it.” |

To open the match, the Tar Heels won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to gain the early advantage. “UNC just stepped up and played great tennis,” Yarsohuk-Tews said. “All in all, I am looking forward to getting back home, getting the girls a little bit of rest and getting ready for the NCAA tournament.” For additional coverage of UM’s women’s tennis team, visit www.TheUTennis.com. 2011 ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE WOMEN’S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP Sunday, April 24
