Hurricanes Earn First-Round Bye in ACC Tournament

2011 ACC Men’s Tennis Championship Bracket

 

CORAL GABLES, FLA. – The No. 25 University of Miami men’s tennis team earned the No. 4 seed in this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Championship, running from April 21-24 at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

 

The top-four seeded squads earn a first-round bye and will open tournament competition on Fri., April 22. The fourth-seeded Hurricanes will face the winner of the opening-round match between fifth-seeded Georgia Tech and 12th-seeded Boston College on Friday at 9 a.m.

 

That winner advances to Saturday’s 10 a.m. semifinal.

 

This season, the Canes put together an 8-3 mark in ACC play – and a 14-7 record overall, winning five straight before dropping a pair road matches over the weekend. It marks the third time Miami has notched eight-or-more conference wins since joining the league seven seasons ago. In each of the two previous instances, Miami advanced to the NCAA’s Round of 16.

 

Fifth-seeded Georgia Tech also finished with an 8-3 conference record, however the Canes edged the Yellow Jackets, 4-3, on March 13 to earn the four-seed.

 

Undefeated and top-ranked Virginia picked up the No. 1 seed in this week’s tournament and earned a first-round bye along with No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Duke and Miami. The same four schools earned the top-four seeds on the women’s side as well.

 

The remaining men’s teams get competition underway on Thursday: No. 5 Georgia Tech versus No. 12 Boston College at 9 a.m., No. 8 Florida State versus No. 9 Maryland at 9 a.m., No. 7 Wake Forest versus No. 10 Clemson at Noon and No. 6 Virginia Tech versus No. 11 NC State at 3 p.m.
