No. 5 Miami Finishes ACC Road Season Undefeated
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The fifth-ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team wrapped up its Atlantic Coast Conference road season with an unblemished record after an easy 7-0 win at No. 26 Maryland Saturday afternoon at the Cole Tennis Courts.
The win moved the Hurricanes to 17-4 overall, 9-1in ACC play and 6-0 on the road in conference play after a win at Boston College on Friday. The loss dropped the Terps to 12-7 overall and 2-7 in league play.
“We played great tennis this weekend,” assistant Alex Santos said. “We played with energy, intensity and determination and it showed in the results.”
Miami took an early 1-0 lead when the `Canes claimed the doubles point after an 8-6 win for the 11th-ranked tandem of Bianca Eichkorn and Anna Bartenstein over Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar in the No. 1 position.
Gabriela Mejia made it 2-0 Miami with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 over Ana Belzunce before 48th-ranked Bartenstein claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jordaan Stanford at No. 2.
The match-clinching point then came at No. 6, where Melissa Bolivar pulled away from Julia Huschke for a 6-4, 6-0 win.
Ahead 4-0, Miami wrapped up the match with wins by 109th-ranked Kayla Rizzolo at No. 4, eighth-ranked Bianca Eichkorn at No. 1 and Danielle Mills at No. 5.
“I was happy to see the girls playing as a team and functioning as a unit,” Santos said. “We played well, but we need to stay motivated and continue to focus on the road ahead.”
Eichkorn’s win improved her ACC record to a perfect 10-0 in the No. 1 position. She is also now just one win away from tying Laura Vallverdu for a school record 131 career victories.
The Hurricanes will wrap up their regular season schedule at home on Friday against No. 4 Duke at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
