No. 28 Miami Men's Tennis on the Road for Two Key ACC Matchups

March 31, 2011

Coral Gables, Fla.—The No. 28 University of Miami men’s tennis team (10-5, 4-1 ACC) hits the road this weekend for matchups against No. 35 Wake Forest and No. 59 North Carolina State. The Hurricanes will take on the Demon Deacons tomorrow at 3:30 p.m., in Winston-Salem, NC. Sunday’s match will pit the ‘Canes against the Wolfpack at noon in Raleigh.

Miami enters the weekend in sole possession of fourth place in the ACC, a crucial spot given that the top-four teams at season’s end will receive first-round byes in the ACC tournament. The Hurricanes have won six-of-eight heading into Friday’s slate with Wake Forest.

Miami senior Carl Sundberg comes in to the weekend with 64 career singles wins, and with two victories this weekend, would move into 16th place all-time in school history for singles wins, passing former All-Americans Luigi D’Agord, Joaquim Rasgado, and Pat Cramer. With a doubles win this weekend, Sundberg would also move into eighth place on Miami’s career doubles victories list.

Fellow Miami senior Keith Crowley is also climbing up the wins list in his final season in Coral Gables, with a chance to move into the school’s Top 25 for career singles wins with a pair of victories this weekend.

Despite all of the senior leadership—at least four seniors have started every match this season for UM in singles, it is freshman Gabriel Flores who is leading the way for Miami with a 4-1 conference singles record. It seems as Flores goes, the ‘Canes go, as he has secured a point in every ACC victory this season for Miami.

Wake Forest (8-7, 2-3 ACC) is led by No. 63-ranked Jonathan Wolff and No. 113-ranked Tripper Carleton. NC State (8-9, 0-5) is led by Dominic Hodgson and will be looking for its first conference win of the year.

The Hurricanes are a combined 8-4 against the Demon Deacons and Wolfpack in the regular season since joining the ACC in 2004-05.
