AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Miami swimming & diving team earned 18 points in two events on Thursday evening, on the opening day of the NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center hosted by the University of Texas.
For the first time in almost 10 years, an UMiami swimmer took part in the swimming portion of the NCAA Championships. Senior Annika Saarnak (Pühalepa, Estonia) competed in her final 50-yard freestyle as a Miami Hurricane, turning in a time of 22.99 in the preliminary round. For `Canes swimming head coach Christie Shefchunas, Saarnak was one of her first recruits when she arrived in Coral Gables five years ago.
In the diving portion of the championships, junior Carrie Dragland (Woodinville, Wash.) claimed All-America honors in the 1-meter springboard with an eighth place finish (314.85 pts). Senior Brittany Viola finished with honorable mention All-America honors in the event, turning in a 10th place finish – second in the B finals – with a score of 313.05 points.
Freshman Thea Vock was the only other Hurricanes diver competing on the day, finishing with 255.05 points in the prelims.
Miami will continue with NCAA action on Friday, as Vock and Dragland take part in the 3-meter springboard.
