Junior Carrie Dragland finished in third place in the finals of the women’s 3-meter springboard on Friday at the NCAA Diving “B” Zone Qualifier housed in Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia.
Dragland, finishing 11th in Thursday’s 1-meter event, scored 283.90 in the finals, earning a spot in this year’s NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships later in the month in Austin, Texas. The transfer from the University of Alabama turned in her best scores of the finals with a pair of 54.60 dives in her second and fourth dives, respectively.
The first of her high-total dives was a Forward 2 1/2 Somersault Pike, followed by the second – a Reverse 1 1/2 Somersault 1 1/2 Twist Free.
In order for a student-athlete to compete in the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, he or she must dive in their respective events in his/her zone qualifier, and perform the required five dives (with an option of six) and accumulate a qualifying score for the finals event following the preliminary round.
Freshman Thea Vock finished eighth in the event, registering a score of 569.80, while senior Brittany Viola was 11th with 547.90.
Over on the men’s side, freshman Samuel Dorman took part in the 3-meter springboard, finishing fourth in Thursday’s 1-meter finals. Dorman has already qualified for the NCAA Championships on Thursday, but looked to do it in yet another event Friday.
He would finish fourth once again, tallying a final round score of 373.15 on his six dives. Dorman netted his best dive with a 78.20 judges’ score on a Forward 2 1/2 Somersault 2 Twist Pike. He had an opening dive score of 74.40, landing a Forward 3 1/2 Somersault Pike.
The three-day diving event concludes tomorrow with the platform event on both the men’s and women’s side.
