No. 10 Miami Women's Tennis Sweeps FIU to Improve to 4-0

CORAL GABLES, Fla. –The 10th-ranked and top-seeded University of Miami women’s tennis team improved to 4-0 Friday with an easy 7-0 win over No. 57 FIU at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The win was the Hurricanes’ second over the Panthers this season.

The Hurricanes (4-0) made quick work of the Panthers (1-5), winning the doubles point before picking up straight sets wins at No. 4 with Gabriela Mejia, No. 1 with Bianca Eichkorn and finally No. 2 with Anna Bartenstein to seal the victory.

“I’m really happy with our overall effort today,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We cleaned up some things we’ve been working on and we stayed focused. It was what we needed to do to continue to prepare for our ACC opener.”

After winning all three doubles matches to go up1-0, Mejia easily got past Rita, Maisak, 6-2, 6-2, moments before Eichkorn made it 3-0 on Court 1 with another 6-2, 6-2 win over Liset Brito.

Bartenstein had a tough opponent in Christine Seredni on Court 2 but persevered with a 6-2, 6-3 victory to secure the Hurricanes’ fourth win of the spring.

With the match in hand, Danielle Mills took down Lisa Johnson, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 to put the `Canes up 5-0 before Melissa Bolivar and Brittany Dubins clinched the sweep with wins at five and six. Bolivar pulled away from Guilietta Boha, 6-3, 6-1 and Dubins ended it with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Maria Spenceley.

The match started with the `Canes taking an early 1-0 lead after picking up wins in all three doubles matches. Mejia and Bolivar turned in an 8-4 win at No. 2 over Seredni and Boha to get things going for the `Canes, before Eichkorn and Bartenstein won by the top spot by the same scored over Brito and Spenceley. After winning the point, UM’s No. 3 team of Dubins and Bistra Otashliyska edged out an 8-6 win for a clean doubles sweep.

Friday’s meeting was the second this spring between the `Canes and the Panthers. Miami won the first match-up, 5-2, on Jan. 29 as a part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
