Miami Women's Tennis Ranked 12th in Initial 2011 Poll

Jan. 4, 2011

SKILLMAN, N.J. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team will enter the 2011 season ranked No. 12 in the Campbell/ITA National Team Rankings, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday.

The Hurricanes will open their spring season on Friday, Jan. 21 when they play host to FAU at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

In addition to the team rankings being announced, singles and doubles rankings were also released. All-America senior Bianca Eichkorn headlines a group of five `Canes to earn a place in the initial rankings. She will enter the season ranked No. 16 nationally in singles play, as well as No. 46 in doubles alongside junior teammate Anna Bartenstein, who is ranked No. 98 in singles action.

Eichkorn, who has earned All-America honors each of the last two seasons, is one of just five players in school history with 100 career singles wins. Last year, she went 31-5 in singles play en route to reaching the NCAA singles quarterfinals.

Miami’s third student-athlete to earn a singles ranking is sophomore Danielle Mills, who comes in one spot behind Bartenstein at No. 99.

The Hurricanes’ top ranked doubles team is comprised of junior Gabriela Mejia and freshman Kayla Rizzolo, who are ranked No. 42 after a 7-2 fall campaign. Mejia is coming off an All-America season after going 27-6 and reaching the NCAA quarterfinals last year while paired with former teammate Laura Vallverdu.

The Hurricanes are one of seven Atlantic Coast Conference teams ranked in the poll’s Top 25, joining North Carolina (6), Duke (7), Clemson (11), Florida State (14) and Georgia Tech (16) and Virginia (24). The ACC’s seven teams are the most of any conference in the country, as the Pac-10 and SEC are tied for second with six apiece.
