Hurricanes Claim Singles, Doubles Titles at Clay Court Classic
BRADENTON, Fla. – The University of Miami took home both the singles and doubles championship of the 2010 Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic on Sunday as Bianca Eichkorn claimed the singles title while her teammates Gabriela Mejia and Kayla Rizzolo paired up to win the doubles crown.
Eichkorn won the singles championship in convincing fashion, beating Notre Dame’s Chrissie McGaffigan, 6-4, 6-1. The title was her second of the fall after claiming the first flight championship of the Miami Fall Invitational in late September.
In the doubles championship match, Mejia and Rizzolo made quick work of Oklahoma State’s Kanya Narattana and Nataliya Shatkovskaya, 8-1.
“It was great to see the way Bianca, Gaby and Kayla improved throughout the weekend,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “It was a nice way to end the fall season with the girls playing such solid tennis.”
Eichkorn claimed wins over Notre Dame’s Julie Sabacinski in the quarterfinal round and Baylor’s Karolina Filipiak in the semifinals to set-up the match with McGaffigan.
Mejia and Rizzolo took out Baylor’s Karolina Filipiak and Aya Bara in the semifinals before their title victory Sunday.
The Hurricanes will now shift their focus to the spring season, which is scheduled to begin on Jan. 21 with a dual match against Florida Atlantic at 12 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
