Morris, Miller Earn Weekly Honors for Miami
Nov. 8, 2010
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami freshman quarterback Stephen Morris has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week, as announced Monday by the conference office. In addition to Morris’ honor, fellow freshman Lamar Miller was named Rivals.com National Freshman of the Week.
Both student-athletes played the best games of their young careers in Miami’s 26-20 come-from-behind win over Maryland on Saturday.
Morris, a true freshman making his first career start, completed 18-of-30 passes against Maryland, but none was bigger than the final completion for a 35-yard touchdown to Leonard Hankerson with 37 seconds to play. The touchdown pass gave the `Canes a 26-20 win and capped off an impressive debut for the rookie. Morris threw for 286 yards, a single-game high for any UM quarterback this season, and also rushed for 13 yards.
Miller ran for a personal-high 125 yards and a touchdown on the ground while catching two passes for 20 yards in his first career start. The UM ground game ran for 218 yards and didn’t miss a beat without senior Damien Berry. It marked the fifth time in the last six games that a Hurricane running back reached the century mark.
Other ACC honors this week went out to North Carolina’s T.J. Yates (Offensive Back), Duke’s Cooper Helfet (Offensive Lineman), Virginia Tech’s Bruce Taylor (Defensive Lineman), Clemson’s DeAndre McDaniel (Defensive Back) and Virginia Tech’s David Wilson (Specialist).
Morris is the second Hurricane to earn ACC Rookie of the Week honors after Miller was recognized for his performance against Florida A&M in the season-opener.
Morris, Miller and the Hurricanes will make their final regular season road trip of the 2010 season this weekend when they head to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech on Saturday, Nov. 13 at noon at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The game will be televised live on the ACC Network.
