`Canes Duo Advances Into Doubles Semifinal at ITA Regional

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Miami’s 16th-ranked and second-seeded doubles team of Bianca Eichkorn and Anna Bartenstein advanced into the semifinal round of the 2010 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championship Saturday at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Eichkorn and Bartenstien won two matches Saturday to advance into the tournament’s semifinal round on Sunday. In their first match, the `Canes defeated Georgia Tech’s Rocio Alberca Lopez and Muriel Wacker, 9-7, before following that up with a convincing 8-2 victory over Stetson’s Carolina de los Santos and Unnati Purushotham. Eichkorn and Bartenstein will now take on Joanna Mather and Caroline Hitimana of Florida for a chance to play for the regional championship.
In singles play, second-seeded Eichkorn was upset by Florida’s Alexandra Cercone, 7-6 (7), 6-4, while Bartenstein also dropped her third round match, losing to Florida State’s Katie Rybakova, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
Kayla Rizzolo got off to a good start in consolation singles play, winning a pair of matches to advance into the quarterfinals. She first eased past Georgia Southern’s Paola Garrido-Rodriguez, 6-1, 6-1, before turning in another convincing win with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Aline Berkenbrock of UNF. Rizzolo will now play Georgia Tech’s Christine Ngo for a chance to advance into the semifinal round.
Miami’s other doubles team of Rizzolo and Gabriela Mejia won 8-1 over Florida A&M’s Olagbegi and Dean before dropping their quarterfinal match against Florida’s second-seeded duo of Will and Oyen, 8-3.
