Two Hurricanes Earn Wins at ITA Regional Championships

GAINESVILLE, FLA. – Senior Carl Sundberg and junior Santiago Nieto of the University of Miami men’s tennis team put together wins on Saturday as the Hurricanes closed competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Regional Championships at the University of Florida.
Sundberg (5-3), ranked No. 96 in the nation and seeded eighth in the tournament, picked up his third win over the last four matches on Saturday, knocking off Mercer’s Pierre Tafelski, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (5), in consolation play.
Nieto (5-3) also notched a victory in consolation play, defeating Will Oliver of Georgia, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (8), for his fourth win over his last five matches.
Senior Waylon Chin (3-5) saw his tournament conclude in the Round of 32, falling to 105th ranked Bob van Overbeek of host Florida, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Senior Eduardo Pavia (5-3) also dropped his match in Saturday’s Round of 32, as Florida State’s No. 43 Clint Bowles won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
The Hurricanes return to competition at the Texas Invitational from Nov. 5-7 in Austin, Texas.
