Oct. 21, 2010
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami cross country team will host the Miami Elite Invitational at Larry and Penny Thompson Park in Miami on Friday. The first race is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
The Hurricanes’ lone home meet of the season will be the final tune-up for the men’s and women’s teams before the ACC Championships in Boston on Oct. 30.
Larry and Penny Thompson Park will feature a single 5K course with the women’s race set to begin at 6 p.m. with the men following at 6:30 p.m.
Several local collegiate teams will be participating, including St. Thomas, Nova Southeastern, Florida Memorial and Johnson and Wales.
In the season’s previous four meets, freshmen Connor Adams and Brooke Dovell have been thetop finishers for both the men’s and women’s teams respectively.
The women are fresh off their second team victory of the season at the Stetson Hatter Invitational in DeLand, Fla. last week, while the men also impressed with their second place result.
The ladies plan to use their largest contingent of runners this season as 12 `Canes will tackle the 5K home course. Joining Dovell will be fellow freshmen Lindsi Arrington, Cristina Brea and Danielle Glynn. However, the ladies will also feature some veteran leadership as seniors Katharine Woodard, Emma Steppe and Caitlin Knapp are also slated to compete.
The men will again compete with eight runners, with senior Charles Michel as the only upperclassman. Along with Adams, freshmen Sean Pezzulo, Phil Wood, Luke Fontaine and Michael Coogan will be joined by sophomores Greg Kaczka and Damon Campbell.
The race will be the final home meet for Monika Freiser, Knapp, Steppe, Woodard and Michel.
