DeLAND, Fla. –

The University of Miami women’s cross country team took the Stetson Sodexo Invitational championship Friday evening while the men placed second in the Hurricanes’ final race before hosting their lone home meet next week.

Freshman Brooke Dovell was the third overall finisher in the women’s 5K race, leading her team to a title with a time of 18:25. Finishing in eighth and ninth places were Katharine Woodard and Lindsi Arrington, respectively – with equal times of 19:02.

Seniors Caitlin Knapp (19:24) and Emma Steppe (19:36) rounded out the Top 5 and Miami finished with a total of 50 points.

“Brooke led the way today for us,” said assistant cross country coach Damon Griffiths. “But, Caitlin and Emma came through to secure the win.”

Flower Mound, Texas native, Connor Adams paced the men – finishing third at 26:01. Adams, like Dovell for the women, has been his team’s top performer in all four meets this season.

Greg Kaczka registered a solid performance as well, finishing just two spots behind Adams in 26:08. Freshman Luke Fontaine (26:45) placed 13th. Charles Michel and Phil Wood also placed among the squad’s top five.

“The men ran a controlled effort today,” added Griffiths. “Connor and Greg were pacing the group for the early miles.”

The men finished with 53 points, behind only champion Embry Riddle’s 32 points.

Florida A&M’s Shauib Winter (25:23) was the men’s individual champion while Friederkie Feil of FAU paced the women at 17:33.

“I am very pleased about how both teams competed today,” concluded Griffiths. “With two weeks to go before conference, they are continuing to gain experience and confidence.”

The Hurricane will host their next meet, the Miami Elite Invitational on Friday, Oct. 22.
