Miami Hosts No. 18 Duke on Breast Cancer Awareness Night

Oct. 6, 2010

CORAL GABLES, Fla. –

The University of Miami women’s soccer team will play host to No. 18 Duke on Breast Cancer Awareness Night Thursday at Cobb Stadium. Kick-off is set to for 7:30 p.m.

The Hurricanes, joined by the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center have waived the price of admission to the crucial Atlantic Coast Conference match-up. However, donations to help benefit breast cancer research at the University of Miami’s Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute are encouraged.

Additionally, the `Canes will be sporting special pink jerseys that will be auctioned off on HurricaneSports.com, with those proceeds going to breast cancer research as well. Click here for more information on how to participate in the auction.

On the pitch, Miami looks to carry over the momentum gained from a 3-0 road victory against Clemson in its last match. That contest saw the Hurricanes (7-3-1, 1-1-0 ACC) dominate the overmatched Tigers as Miami fired 10 shots on goal, while Vikki Alonzo only needed to make five saves for her fourth shutout of the season.

Tara Schwitter became the 11th different goal scorer on the season for UM when she scored her 26th-minute game-winner at Clemson. The Hurricanes have been touting a much improved offense all season, but the difference from last season is staggering. In 2009, Miami scored 20 goals in 19 contests, while already this season the Hurricanes have hit the back of the net on 22 occasions in 11 games.

Senior Brittney Steinbruch will be looking to become the `Canes all-time scorer with her next point. Currently, the Wyckoff, N.J. native is tied with former UM great Britney Butcher (2001-04) with 73 career points.

As impressive as the offense has been, the defense may even be better. Senior Brittney Macdonald has been the dominate force she has always been on the backline and sophomore Ali Brennan has followed in her footsteps so far this season.

In goal, Alonzo has been nothing short of spectacular. Her goals against average is 0.79 and she has denied four of the five penalty kicks she has faced this season.

The Blue Devils (6-3-3, 0-2-1) may have the national ranking that Miami is aiming for, but they will be facing a very tough Hurricane squad that is hungry for its first win against them in program history.

Duke owns a 5-0-1 advantage in the all-time series and is led this season by Laura Weinberg – who has a team-leading five goals and 11 points.

Fans in attendance also will have the chance to win several prizes, including a team autographed poster and soccer ball as well as one of many Miami Soccer t-shirts.

For those fans following Miami women’s soccer on facebook and twitter, a trivia question will be posted the morning of the match. Listen to the public address announcer’s prompt and if you are among the first three with the correct answer, you will win a prize.

HurricaneSports.com will also feature a live gameday chat for fans to follow at home or in the office. To participate in the in-game chat below, return to this page 30-minutes prior to kick-off. Live stats will also be available at HurricaneSports.com.
