Three Former Hurricanes Set for MLB Playoffs

Oct. 6, 2010

Coral Gables, Fla. – Three former University of Miami baseball players will be participating in this year’s Major League Baseball (MLB) playoff race for two different teams, beginning Weds., Oct 6.

Pat Burrell and Aubrey Huff will be helping the San Francisco Giants chase the National League Championship, while Danny Valencia will be starting at third base for the Minnesota Twins in their chance to gain the American League Title.

Valencia (2005-06) had a good rookie season 2010, hitting .311/.351/.448 for Minnesota, and was better than scouts predicted defensively at third base. A 19th round draft pick in 2006, Valencia is expected to start for the Twins in their opening round playoff series against the New York Yankees, beginning tonight in the Minneapolis at 8:37 p.m.

Burrell (1996-98) has been to the playoffs before with the Philadelphia Phillies, and now makes his playoff run with the San Francisco Giants. During the season, Burrell is expected to hit in the middle of the order while patrolling left field. During the regular season, Burrell played in 120 games for the Giants, hitting .265 with 20 homeruns and 64 RBI. He scored 50 times while registering 94 hits.

Aubrey Huff (1997-98) is making his first-ever playoff appearance in the major leagues, and will start at first base for the Giants. During the regular season, Huff led the Giants in several offensive categories, including batting average (.290), homeruns (26), RBI (86), hits (165) and on-base percentage (.385).

The Giants take on the Atlanta Braves on Thurs., Oct. 7, in San Francisco at 9:37 p.m.
