PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The University of Miami’s 53rd-ranked junior Anna Bartenstein lost a hard fought 7-6, 7-6 match to 28th-ranked and seventh-seeded Danielle Lao of USC in the opening round of the qualifying bracket of the 2010 ITA/Riviera All-American Championships Tuesday at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Bartenstein battled with Lao in the first set and later forced her into a second set tie-break before eventually dropping the match.
Attention will now turn to All-America senior Bianca Eichkorn, who will begin singles play in the main draw portion of the tournament on Thursday. Eichkorn will also team with Bartenstein to compete in main draw doubles action.
Earlier on Tuesday, Miami’s doubles tandem of Gabriela Mejia and Kayla Rizzolo fell to Duke’s top-seeded team of Ella Nze and Nadine Fahoum, 8-4, in the opening round qualifying for the doubles main draw.
The ‘Canes will however continue competing in qualifying consolation play on Wednesday with Mejia and Rizzolo set to face Holly Cao and Samantha Rosenkrans from Harvard in doubles action and Bartenstein scheduled to go up against Wake Forest’s Kayla Duncan in singles play.
