`Canes Wrap Up Invitational with Perfect Singles Record

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team wrapped up the 2010 Miami Fall Invitational on Sunday winning all nine of its matches in the individual round-robin style tournament at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. For the second straight day the Hurricanes swept singles play, finishing 15-0 for the tournament.
Senior Bianca Eichkorn – ranked No. 14 in the country the ITA – led the charge winning all three of her singles matches in the first flight. Eichkorn capped off the weekend with a big win over Michigan’s 12th-ranked Denise Muresan, 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the first flight title match on Sunday.
In the second flight, No. 53 Anna Bartenstein downed Brooke Bolender, 6-3, 6-4, while Kayla Rizzolo won 6-3, 6-2 over Sam Crister. Danielle Mills was victorious in the fourth flight with an easy 6-3, 6-0 win over Mimi Nguyen, No. 83 Gabriela Mejia improved to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Michelle Sulahian and Bistra Otashlyska defeated Taylor Fournier, 6-2, 6-3.
Prior to singles play, the `Canes went 3-0 in doubles, led by a dominating 8-0 win for the 16th-ranked team of Eichkorn and Bartenstein over UCF’s Jenny Frisell and Alexis Rodriguez. Mejia and Rizzolo also improved to 2-0 as a team, beating Genevieve Lorbergs and Courtney Griffith, 8-5, while Mills and Otashlyska took down Josephine Haraldson and Jenna Doerfler, 8-3.
“I’m really pleased with the way the girls played throughout the entire tournament,” assistant coach Jeff Thomsen said. “It was a great start to the fall, but we’ll need to continue to improve with one of the biggest events of the year right around the corner.”
The `Canes closed out the weekend winning 20 of 21 matches, going 15-0 in singles and 5-1 in doubles. Eichkorn, Bartenstein and Mejia all went 3-0 in singles, while Rizzolo, Mills and Otashlyska finished 2-0.
In addition to her win over Muresan Sunday in a match-up of two Top 20 players, Eichkorn also teamed with Bartenstein on Saturday to take down Michigan’s fourth-rankd tandem of Rika Tatsuno and Whitney Taney, 8-3.
