CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami dominated play on the second day of the 2010 Miami Fall Invitational with all six Hurricanes coming away victorious in singles play Saturday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
After rain delayed play for the second straight day, action was finally able to get underway late in the morning with student-athletes from all five participating schools playing doubles followed by singles.
After taking two-of-three doubles matches, the `Canes took total control in singles play, with five of their six singles wins coming in straight sets. Gabriela Mejia made quick work of USF’s Kate Parker, winning 6-1, 6-1 before Anna Bartenstein finished off her opponent from USF – Ecaterina Vasenina, 7-5, 6-1. From there, Kayla Rizzolo and Danielle Mills won 6-2, 7-6 (8) and 6-3, 6-3 respectively before Bianca Eichkorn prevailed in a three-set match against USF’s Irene Rehberger, 1-6, 6-0, 6-4. The `Canes last singles competitor of the day was Bistra Otashlyska, who won 6-4, 6-1 over Allesandra Bonte Ale.
“Overall I think we competed at a very high level today,” assistant coach Jeff Thomsen said. “Tomorrow should be another stern test and I expect the girls to be up for the challenge.”
In doubles, Eichkorn and Bartenstein won 8-3, Mejia and Rizzolo won 9-7 and Mills and Otashlyska fell 9-7 to Michigan’s Mimi Nguyen and Sam Crister.
Play will wrap up Sunday beginning with doubles competition at 9 a.m. Admission to the individual round-robin style tournament is free to the public.
