Cross Country to Compete in Mountain Dew Invitational
Sept. 17, 2010
After a great start to their seasons, the University of Miami cross country teams head to Gainesville, Fla. to compete in the University of Florida’s Mountain Dew Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 18.
In their season-opening meet two weeks ago at the King of the Hill Challenge, both the men and women came away with team championships, while freshman Brooke Dovell claimed the individual championship for the women.
For her performance, Dovell (19:19) was named the ACC Cross Country Performer of the Week.
The Mountain Dew Invitational will be a 5K course for the women, while the men will run an 8K race.
“This meet will be a good early season test against several teams that are ranked in the region and nationally,” said assistant cross country Damon Griffiths.
Nine other women will join Dovell as the team looks to maintain its momentum, including fellow freshman Lindsi Arrington and veteran leaders Katharine Woodard, Emma Steppe and Anna Bona.
The young men’s team will feature a strong group of freshmen this weekend, led by Connor Adams – who was the third overall finisher in the season opener. Freshmen Sean Pezzulo, Phil Wood and Michael Coogan were among the Top 5 scorers for the ‘Canes at the King of the Hill.
The lone upperclassman competing for the men will be senior Charles Michel, the top finisher in each of the Hurricanes races a season ago.
Miami will be joined by 19 other Florida colleges and universities, with the women set to start at 8 a.m. followed by the men at 8:30 a.m.
