Aug. 12, 2010
Budapest, Hungary – Annika Saarnak finished 26th overall in the women’s 100m butterfly event on Thurs., Aug. 12, as part of the LEN European Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Saarnak posted a time of 1:01.34 in the event.
Saarnak, a senior from Pühalepa, Estonia (officially the Republic of Estonia), a municipality of Kärdla in Hiiu County, took part in the third of her four-event participation in this year’s LEN European Championships. In the qualifying round of the 100m butterfly, she touched the wall at 1:01.34, finishing 26th in the preliminary round.
The top 16 swimmers advanced to the semifinals, with the final qualifying time being 1:00.26, recorded by Sina Sutter of Germany. Sweden’s Therese Alshammar collected the top qualifying time of 57.89 seconds. Alshammar was also the top qualifier in Wednesday’s 50m butterfly.
During the 2009-10 season for the `Canes and UM swimming head coach Christie Shefchunas, Saarnak held two of the top five times on the season in the 100-yard butterfly, which differs in distance from the European metric system.
Originally scheduled to compete in the 200m free, Saarnak has scratched from that event, and will participate in just one other event in this year’s Championships, with that being the 50m freestyle on Sat., Aug. 14.
The LEN European Championships will continue through Sun., Aug. 15.
The European Aquatics Championships is organized by the LEN, the governing body for aquatics in Europe. Since 1999, they have included 4 aquatics disciplines: swimming (long course/50m pool), diving, synchronized swimming and open water swimming. Since 2000, they have been held biennially, in even-numbered years.
