CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami junior catcher Yasmani Grandal has been named to the 2010 Yahoo! Sports All-America Team, as announced by the website on Tuesday.
Grandal recently wrapped up one of the most productive offensive seasons in school history, leading the Atlantic Coast Conference in batting average (.401), slugging percentage (.721) and on-base percentage (.527) en route to 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year honors.
The Miami native hit safely in 48 of his 62 games played – including 30 multi-hit games – and finished with 24 doubles, 15 homers, 60 RBI, 56 runs scored and 57 walks on the year. He currently ranks among the Top 5 in the ACC in seven different offensive categories, including a .994 fielding percentage that also ranks among the top marks for a catcher nationally.
In ACC play in 2010, Grandal hit an impressive .463, going 50-for-108 in 30 regular season league contests. He hit 61 points higher than the next-highest hitter (Clemson’s Brad Miller at .402), while leading the league in hits (50), doubles (14), total bases (90), on-base percentage (.570) and slugging percentage (.833) in ACC play.
In addition to earning the Yahoo! Sports All-America honor, Grandal also recently earned Louisville Slugger First Team All-America honors as well as being named a finalist for both the Golden Spikes Award and Johnny Bench Award.
He is one of 16 players nationally named the Yahoo! Sports All-America Team. The squad is comprised of four starting pitchers, two relievers, a designated hitter, a utility player and one player per fielding position.
Last week, Grandal was selected with the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft by the Cincinnati Reds. In his three seasons in Coral Gables, Grandal hit .326 with 38 homers, 133 RBI and 129 runs scored in 159 games.
