Four Miami Rowers Named 2010 CRCA Scholar Athletes

Coral Gables, Fla. – Four University of Miami rowing student-athletes have been named 2010 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) scholar athletes, as announced by the CRCA following the 2009-10 season. Sarah Medland, Theresa Recicar, Monika Sajincic and Molly Thornton all earned the award for the Hurricanes.

Sarah Medland, a junior from Melbourne, Australia, is currently working towards a degree in Elementary Education, and helped the Hurricanes the past two years in achieving finals marks in the Aramark South/Central Sprints in Oak Ridge, Tenn. She rowed in a variety of seats throughout the year, including the six-seat for the `Canes, mostly in the Varsity Eight boat.

Sophomore Theresa Recicar, a native of Boca Raton, Florida, is making her first appearance to the CRCA scholar athlete team after beginning her Hurricanes career a season ago on the novice team. Recicar served in the second seat for a majority of the last part of the season in the Varsity Four boat, while majoring in Accounting at UM.

Monika Sajincic, a junior from Piran, Slovenia, is also making her first appearance to the scholar athlete team. She served in the three-seat during the Knecht Cup in Bloomington, Indiana – serving with the Varsity Eight crew, and has been a part of the `Canes since the 2008-09 campaign. Currently, Sajincic is working towards a degree in Math.

The final Hurricanes rower named to the CRCA scholar athlete list is Molly Thornton, a senior from Walpole, Massachusetts. Thornton, working in the second seat for the Varsity Eight for the Hurricanes at the Knecht Cup in the Varsity Eight, has been a part of the program for the Hurricanes since arriving at UM as a freshman. She recently completed her degree in International Finance from UM.

The requirements for student-athletes to be named to the CRCA scholar athlete list are as follows: The student-athlete has met all eligibility rules as defined by her institution; The student-athlete was in her 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of eligibility; The student-athlete rowed in her institution’s NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75% of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event; The Head Coach of the student-athletes institution was a member in good standing of the CRCA as of May 1, 2010.

The criteria is the student-athlete has had a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career (through the fall semester/quarter for the current competition year).
