Miami Set for NCAA Track and Field Championships

CORAL GABLES – After advancing through the East Preliminary Round, 11 members from the University of Miami track and field teams will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships at the University of Oregon’s prestigious Hayward Field.
The women’s team, which holds a No. 13 national ranking, is led by junior Ti’erra Brown. The Hampton, Va. native is currently the second ranked competitor in the nation in both the 100 and 400m hurdles. Brown will also compete as a member of the 4×400 relay team. In Greensboro, N.C. at the East Preliminary Round, Brown set the school record in the national quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles at 54.74 seconds – the fourth-fastest time in the world this year.
Sisters Takecia and Tameka Jameson will compete in the 400m hurdles and the 4×400 relay alongside Brown. Miami is the only team in the hurdle field with three women competing in a single event. Sophomore Charlene Fuller will join the three juniors in the relay.
Three seniors will also be in action for the last time of their collegiate careers. Kristy Whyte who was the 2008 ACC Performer of the Year will compete in the 100m dash. Whyte advanced to the national championships after recording a quarterfinal time of 11.43 seconds at the East Preliminary round.
Another senior for the women, Deandra Doyley, will be participating in the in the triple jump. She reached Eugene with her leap of 13.14m (43-01.50) – the second-best mark of her season. Doyley, a native of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., holds the distinction of becoming the first Hurricane to earn all-conference honors at four different ACC Championships.
The lone senior competing for the men will be Cory Nelms. The Neptune, N.J. native is coming off a stellar performance at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. In the 110m hurdles he qualified for the national semifinals after he broke the school record in a time of 13.65 seconds. That same day as a member of the 4×100 relay, Nelms helped set the school record with a time of 39.57 seconds.
Nelms will be joined by DeMarcus Van Dyke, Travis Benjamin and Brandon McGee in the 4×100 relay. The record-setting performance by the quartet in Greensboro was the second of the season. On May 15, the squad circled the track in 39.60 seconds.
Sophomore Brittni Finch, who collected All-America honors in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor National Championships, will compete in the outdoor long jump on Saturday. At the East Preliminary Round, Finch easily surpassed her career-best mark, with a leap of 6.43m (21-01.25).
All of the running events for the ‘Canes will feature three semifinal heats, with the top two per heat plus the next two fastest times advancing to the national championship race. In the jumping events, there will be two flights with the top nine plus ties advancing to a three attempt final. The top eight places in each event score. The points are assigned as follows: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.
