Grandal Selected 12th Overall in 2010 MLB Draft by Cincinnati

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami junior catcher Yasmani Grandal was selected with the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Monday night. He is the second Hurricane to be selected by the Reds in the last three years, as Grandal’s former teammate Yonder Alonso was selected by Cincinnati with the seventh overall pick in the 2008 draft.
Grandal is having one of the most productive offensive seasons in school history, hitting .412 with 14 homers, 56 RBI, 54 runs scored and 55 walks in 59 games. He leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in hitting, on-base percentage (.537) and slugging percentage (.730) and his .994 fielding percentage is among the best in the nation at his position.
He is the seventh Hurricane to be drafted in the first round in the last six years and the first Miami catcher to be selected in the first round since Charles Johnson was selected by the Florida Marlins with the 28th overall pick in the 1992 draft.
In his three seasons in Coral Gables, Grandal has recorded 37 homers, 129 RBI, 127 runs and 110 walks in 156 games. He boasts a .329 average, a .451 on-base percentage, a .617 slugging percentage and a .985 fielding percentage in his collegiate career.
Grandal is the eighth UM player to be drafted in the first round in head coach Jim Morris’ 17 seasons in Coral Gables.
