Jay Becomes Eighth Former `Cane to Make 2010 MLB Roster
April 28, 2010
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Former University of Miami outfielder Jon Jay has been called up to St. Louis Cardinals’ active roster, making him the sixth player from the 2004 Hurricanes’ roster to reach the big leagues.
Jay joins former teammates Brian Barton, Ryan Braun, Cesar Carrillo, Chris Perez and Gaby Sanchez as members of the 2004 Miami squad that have gone on to make an MLB roster.
Jay was batting .347 (12th in Pacific Coast League) with eight doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI at Triple-A Memphis before being called up on Monday. Jay, 25, was 7-for-7 in stolen bases attempts and had hit safely in a league-best 16-straight games to begin the season.
Miami now has eight former `Canes currently on MLB rosters. Milwaukee Brewer Ryan Braun headlines the group, as the two-time All-Star is currently hitting .350 with five homers, 20 RBI, 17 runs scored and six stolen bases in 20 games this year.
Jay, who has appeared in two games as a pinch-hitter this week for St. Louis, was a second round draft pick by the Cardinals in the 2006 draft.
