College Park, Md. – The No. 50 University of Miami men’s tennis team won all three doubles matches and six straight in singles play to knock off Maryland, 6-1, on Friday afternoon. It marked back-to-back ACC wins for the Hurricanes (8-10, 2-6) and their first conference road victory of the season.

“Our guys were mentally tough despite the conditions today,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “They were resilient, stayed focused and capitalized on opportunities. We were able to get an important win on the road against a solid Maryland team.”

Christian Blöcker and David Simon got Miami off to a fast start with the 8-4 win at No. 1 in doubles play to improve to a team-best 15-9. All-American Carl Sundberg and Ignacio Taboada – pairing for the first time in conference competition this season – clinched the doubles point with the 8-4 victory at No. 3. Miami’s 57th-ranked tandem of Hector Nieto and Keith Crowley bounced back from an early deficit to complete the doubles sweep, defeating their Terrapin opponents, 8-6, to move to 11-5 this season.

Miami carried that momentum into singles play, winning five consecutive singles matches – including four in straight sets – to earn the 6-1 win over Maryland (13-9, 1-7).

Blöcker started the run with the 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1, followed by Waylon Chin knocking off his opponent at No. 5, 7-5, 6-4, for his fourth-straight win.

Taboada added his fourth ACC singles victory and his third-straight win with the 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 6 to clinch the match for the Hurricanes.

Crowley secured the fifth point for Miami with the 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3, while 110th-ranked Sundberg added the sixth point with the 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win at No. 2.

“We are playing better as a team,” added Rincon. “We are looking forward to playing Boston College on Sunday.”

The Hurricanes return to conference action at Boston College at 11 a.m. on Sun., April 11.
