No. 18 Women's Tennis to Face TCU
March 14, 2010
Coral Gables, Fla. – The 18th-ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team is set to play host to No. 72 TCU on Mon., Mar. 15, as the Hurricanes welcome the perennial Mountain West power to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center at 2 p.m. Admission to the match is free.
The University of Miami (7-3) enters the match riding a four-match win streak, after defeating FIU, 7-0, last Wednesday in Miami. The Hurricanes are 5-1 at home this year, with their lone loss being a 4-3 setback at the hands of No. 5 Baylor on Feb. 6.
TCU (1-9) has struggled this year, with the Horned Frogs only win coming by virtue of a 4-3 decision against No. 30 Texas on Jan. 30. Since that match, TCU has lost eight consecutive, and has plummeted almost 50 spots in the Campbell’s/ITA poll – where the Horned Frogs ranked No. 27 when they defeated the Long Horns.
The Horned Frogs are led by Nina Munch-Soegaard at the No. 1 singles position, holding a record of 3-7 in the spring. She is followed by Kayla Duncan at the No. 2 spot, who owns a team-leading four wins in singles play since the spring season began.
Miami counters with senior Laura Vallverdu (No. 4), a three-time All-American, at the top singles position, holding a record of 20-8 on the season – including 8-2 in the spring. All-American Bianca Eichkorn (No. 40) owns the team’s only perfect spring record, sitting at 10-0, and sports a 15-4 mark overall on the year. Eichkorn has split wins in both the No. 2 and No. 3 position for the Hurricanes.
Also playing well for UM is sophomore Anna Bartenstein (No. 55), posting a record of 19-3 overall, and holds a record of 9-1 in the spring. Her lone loss was a three-set defeat in UM’s loss to Baylor.
In doubles play, UM’s duo of Gabriela Mejia and Laura Vallverdu are ranked fifth nationally, and have turned in a record of 14-5 on the year (3-3 dual). Another doubles squad playing well for the `Canes is Anna Bartenstein and Bianca Eichkorn, teaming for a record of 5-1 in the spring.
Bartenstein has also shared time on the court with senior Claudia Wasilewski, together holding a record of 4-0 in the spring. The team of freshman Danielle Mills and Mejia is 3-0 for UM.
After Monday’s contest with TCU, Miami will step back on the courts again on Fri., Mar. 19, when the Hurricanes travel to ACC and in-state opponent Florida State in Tallahassee at 5 p.m. After that, Miami returns home for four consecutive matches at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, beginning with Georgia Tech on Wed., Mar. 24.
