Feb. 5, 2010

Coral Gables, Fla. – The No. 6 University of Miami women’s tennis team will be seeded sixth at the upcoming ITA Indoor Championships, and will play No. 12 UCLA in the opening round on Fri., Feb. 12 in Madison, Wis. The ITA Indoor Championships are hosted by the University of Wisconsin at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium, and runs Feb. 12-15.

Miami (3-0) will meet UCLA in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Round of 16 contest that saw the Hurricanes claim a 4-2 win over the Bruins in College Station, Texas. In fact, Miami has won the last two meetings in the series, but the Bruins hold a 7-4 advantage overall.

In a series that dates back to 1999, never have the two teams met without one of them being ranked in the Top 15 of the ITA poll.

UM ninth-year head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews is a 1996 graduate of UCLA where she lettered for the Bruins through four seasons in women’s tennis.

In last year’s ITA Indoor Championships, Miami finished the weekend with a 2-1 mark, collecting victories against No. 5 Stanford (5-1) and No. 68 Wisconsin (7-0). The only loss for UM was a 6-1 setback to top-ranked and 2009 Indoor Champion Northwestern, 7-0.

Prior to the match against the Bruins, Miami has its first Top 10 showdown of the season against No. 5 Baylor on Sat., Feb. 6 inside the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m., weather permitting. Scattered showers/storms are possible in and around the Coral Gables area throughout the day on Saturday.

In addition to the host Badgers and Miami Hurricanes, this year’s 16-team field includes: Baylor, California, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Northwestern, North Carolina, Tennessee, UCLA and USC. On the women’s side, 12 of the 15 top-ranked seeds from the ITA Kick-Off Weekend advanced to the National Team Indoors for a chance to capture the crown.

Defending NCAA Champion Duke received this year’s top seed, followed by Northwestern (No. 2), California (No. 3), Georgia (No. 4) and Baylor (No. 5).
