Miami to Face Tough Competition at Penn State

CORAL GABLES –  The University of Miami men’s and women’s track and field teams face a stiff test at Penn State’s National Invitational in University Park, Pa.

 

The women’s draw features five top-25 teams, including No. 21 Connecticut, No. 6 Penn State, No. 8 Tennessee, No. 18 Virginia Tech and No. 23 West Virginia.

 

Senior Deandra Doyley has reached provisional qualifying marks in each the long and triple jumps this seaso. This weekend she will be competing in the long jump as well as the 60m hurdles. Her mark of 6.20m (20-4.25) ranks as the 12th best in the nation so far this season.

 

Joining Doyley in the hurdles will be Ti’erra Brown, the junior also accepted an invitation to compete in the 400m dash. Brown is currently the fifth-ranked hurdler in the nation with a time of 8.22 seconds. Takecia Jameson will also compete in the hurdles and will run in the 200m dash invitational. Tameka Jameson also accepted an invitation, as she will be running in the untraditional 500m dash.

 

Megan Novinger and Rachel Dupree are both tied for third place all time in the indoor high at Miami and each will be looking to improve on their mark of 1.70m (5-07.00). Miranda Wilson will be competing in both the shot put and the weight throw as well.

 

Senior Kristy Whyte will be making her season debut in the 60m dash and will run alongside teammates Ashley Dukes and Tara Thomas.

 

The women’s 4×400 relay team will compete against Georgetown, Penn State Tennessee and Virginia Tech after accepting a bid to perform in the invitational.

 

Rachel Dupree and Britney Clarke will compete in their first pentathlon this season, as they get competition underway, Friday at 12 p.m.

 

The men’s team will get a boost this weekend as it will have its full contingent of sprinters from the Hurricane football team. Competing in the 60m dash will be Travis Benjamin, Nathan Gholston, Lamar Miller and DeMarcus Van Dyke. Brandon Harris will run in the 400m dash and Cory Nelms will return to the event in which he won the ACC title in 2009, the 60m hurdles.  Micanor Regis, a defensive tackle on the gridiron will also compete in the shot put.
