Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team will conclude the 2009-10 regular season on Fri., Jan. 22, when the Hurricanes travel to Florida Atlantic University for a dual meet at the FAU Aquatic Center in Boca Raton, Fla. The meet is scheduled for 3 p.m., and admission is free.

The Hurricanes are coming off three consecutive wins following last weekend’s 163-60 triumph over Central Connecticut State. In that home meet, the `Canes swept first place in all 11 swimming events, while using several different swimmers in races they normally do not compete in.

Miami has dropped five of the last seven matches against the Owls, but claimed a 129-100 victory last season (Nov. 8, 2008) in Coral Gables. Head coach Christie Shefchunas will be seeking her first-ever win in Boca Raton, and she says the team is fired up about the chance to race one of their south Florida rivals.

“FAU has got some strong swimmers, and it will be fun to watch the races tomorrow,” said Shefchunas. “Because we don’t have diving points, we’re going to have to make up a lot – which means the girls need to be prepared to go fast tomorrow. The girls have been doing some amazing things in training. So, I look forward to watching them step-up and compete.”

The Hurricanes have used fast swims the last two weeks with the help of freshman Sofia Johansson who has six 100 breaststroke victories on the year – as well as two 200 breast wins. Johansson has won her last five 100 breast events, and looks to keep that streak alive on Friday.

Another freshman making positive strides for the `Canes has been Christine Anderson who owns two wins in the 500- and 1000 freestyle – both of which were her first time racing collegiately in those events. Last weekend, Anderson took the 1000 freestyle against CCSU with a time of 10:24.88, while claiming the 500 freestyle a week prior against Illinois and Nebraska, turning in a time of 5:01.52.

Junior Ryann Labreche owns six freestyle wins on the year, including three wins in the 500 and two in the 1000. Last weekend against CCSU, Labreche claimed her first 200 free victory of the year, touching the wall in 1:55.67.

Friday’s action serves as the final event of the season before the Hurricanes travel to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The ACC Championships are set to run Feb. 17-20, and are being hosted by the University of North Carolina at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium. However, the platform diving competition (men and women) will be housed at the Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of Duke University. “This will be the last chance for the team to compete before ACC’s,” expressed Shefchunas. “They’re definitely physically prepared, but tomorrow will be a great test to make sure they’re mentally prepared.”
