Hurricanes Ready for 2010 Track and Field Schedule

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami track and field teams will host two meets during the outdoor year and will travel as far as Illinois during its 2010 schedule during the indoor and outdoor seasons, as announced by Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Amy Deem.
The women’s team finished in a tie for 16th place at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last season, led by Murielle Ahoure and Ti’erra Brown. Ahoure has since graduated and Brown returns for her junior season and will look to improve upon her runner-up finish in the 400-meter hurdles national championship.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will compete together in 2010 and the indoor season opens Jan. 15-16 with the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky, before heading to Champaign, Ill. to compete in the Illinois Invitational on Jan. 23. The Hurricanes will close out the month of January at the National Open in State College, Pa., Jan 29-30.
After a two week break Miami returns to action at the prestigious Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. – which is also the site of the 2010 NCAA Indoor National Championships. The `Canes will again have a two week break before the ACC Championships, Feb. 25-27. This year the conference championship will once again be hosted by Virginia Tech.
Senior Cory Nelms won the ACC Title in the indoor 60-meter hurdles, last season and will look to repeat this year.
March 5-6 will offer Miami student-athletes on the cusp of qualifying for NCAA’s a last chance meet, as Notre Dame hosts the Alex Wilson Invitational a week before the national championships at the University of Arkansas, March 12-13.
A season ago in College Station, Texas, Ahoure won the 200-meter title and placed fifth in the 60-meter dash – leading to 14 points and a tie for 12th in the final championship standings for UM.
Just six days after the conclusion of the indoor season, Miami will host its first outdoor event of the season, with the Hurricane Invitational, March 19-20.
The `Canes will stay in the state of Florida for their next three meets; the UCF Invitational, March 26-27; the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., April 2-3 and to host the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 10.
After hosting the ACC Championships last season, Miami will travel to Clemson, S.C. for this season’s edition, April 15-17.
The historic Penn Relay’s loom only one week after the conference championships, April 22-24 at Philadelphia’s famed Franklin Field. After a three-week break the Hurricanes will wrap-up its regular season and head to Atlanta to take part in the Georgia Tech Invitational, May 14-15.
The NCAA Regional Championships will take place May 27-29 in Greensboro, N.C. for the second consecutive season and Eugene, Ore. will be the host site for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 9-12.
Miami had seven women compete in the outdoor championships in 2009 with Brown, Tara Thomas, Kristy Whyte, Deandra Doyley and Takecia and Tameka Jameson all returning in 2010.
