DeVoss, Perry Power Orange Past Green to Tie Series
Nov. 11, 2009
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Game two of the University of Miami baseball team’s Orange-Green World Series went to the Orange team as Zeke DeVoss and Ryan Perry each hit a two-run homer in a 6-3 win over the Green squad Wednesday at Alex Rodriguez Park. The victory for the Orange team ties the best-of-three series up at 1-1 after the Green team won the series opener on Monday, 10-5.
After a scoreless first, Perry put the Orange team on top in the second with a two-run shot to left, scoring Yasmani Grandal who had singled to lead off the inning.
The Green team immediately cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom half of the inning on a Nathan Melendres RBI single.
Starting pitchers Jason Santana (Green) and Kevin Youst (Orange) kept the hitters at bay over the next several innings before back-to-back homers by Harold Martinez and David Villasuso in the bottom of the fifth gave the Green team its first lead, 3-2.
It didn’t take long for the Orange team to re-take the lead however, as DeVoss smacked a two-out, two-run, game-winning homer to put the Orange squad up 4-3.
Iden Nazario earned the victory for the Orange team, striking out two in three innings of relief work. After his team added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth, David Gutierrez came on to pitch a perfect ninth to earn the save.
In addition to DeVoss and Perry, Michael Broad had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI single in the ninth.
For the second straight game, Scott Lawson led the Green team at the plate, going 3-for-5 Wednesday after a two-hit, five RBI performance on Monday. Melendres also finished with a pair of hits for the Green team.
The series finale is slated for Friday at 3 p.m. A pair of freshmen will take the mound in the series finale as RHP Eric Whaley will get the start for the Green team while the Orange team will counter with LHP Jerad Grundy.
Admission is free to the public to Friday’s series finale.
