Lawson Leads Green Team to Victory In Series Opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball team’s Third Annual Orange-Green World Series began Monday afternoon with the Green team picking up a 10-5 win over the Orange squad in the series opener at Alex Rodriguez Park. Behind a five RBI performance by All-ACC second baseman Scott Lawson, the Green team pulled away late in the game to take the first game of the best-of-three fall series.
With the game knotted at five heading into the seventh, the Green team loaded the bases for Lawson, who proceeded to smack a bases-clearing triple to deep center.
Lawson accounted for half of his team’s runs on the day, going 2-for-5 with five RBI in the win. Also for the Green squad, Harold Martinez went 2-for-3 with an RBI double while Stephen Perez reached base four times with a RBI single and three walks.
Yasmani Grandal led the Orange team at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI while Zeke DeVoss finished 2-for-4 with a run batted in.
Ethan Bornstein picked up the win for the Green team in relief of starter Daniel Miranda, who struck out five in five innings of work. Orange starter Chris Hernandez had four strikeouts in two innings of work.
Green jumped out to an early lead, scoring single runs in the second and third. Perez made it 3-0 in the fourth when he singled home Rony Rodriguez, who doubled to lead off the frame.
Chris Pelaez put the Orange team on the board with a sacrifice fly before a Grandal two-run double tied the game up at 3-3.
Lawson put Green back on top with a two-run double in the sixth before Orange tied it back up at 5-5 in the bottom half of the inning.
Game two of the series will be played Wednesday at 3 p.m. Admission is free to the public.
Kevin Youst (Orange) and Jason Santana (Green) are Wednesday’s expected starters.
