Tallahassee, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team continued play at the FSU Seminole Invite on Saturday as senior Claudia Wasilewski picked up a singles win and UM claimed a third place finish in doubles action at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla.

Miami faced tough competition Saturday as UM fell in three-of-four singles draws, but battled back in doubles action to grab two wins, including a third place finish.

Florida State’s doubles team of Francesca Segarelli and Lauren Macfarlane defeated Miami’s pair of Anna Bartenstein and Bianca Eichkorn in the quarterfinals of the Garnet Bracket, 8-4. However, the UM duo bounced back to lay claim to the third place trophy of the draw by defeating Memphis’ Ashley Murdock and Courtney Collins, 8-6.

In the Gold Bracket of doubles, the Hurricanes’ pair of Danielle Mills and Claudia Wasilewski fought past the team of Furman’s Monica Arguello and Jennifer Betts, 8-3, in order to advance to the finals of the event. In the finals, Mills and Wasilewski fell in a thrilling affair to USF’s pair of Ecaterina Vasenina and Allyn Mueller, 8-6.

“Anna and Bianca played really sound doubles this morning,” stated UM assistant coach Jeff Thomsen. “Claudia [Wasilewski] was the one bright spot in singles. She rebounded from yesterday and got back to her winning ways.”

Singles play saw Miami drop three-of-four matches, but it was Wasilewski picking up a big win for the `Canes in her respective bracket.

Wasilewski grabbed a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Jessica Preeg of Furman in the consolation round of the Black Bracket. Wasilewski will face Furman’s Michele Stanford in the fifth place match of the draw on Sunday.

All-American Bianca Eichkorn, 21st-ranked in the ITA preseason singles poll, fell in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) to FSU’s Francesca Segarelli in the semifinals of the Garnet Bracket. The Tengen, Germany native will look to rebound tomorrow when she faces USF’s Irene Rehberger in the third place match of the draw.

Sophomore Bartenstein was downed in straight sets in the semifinals of the Gold Bracket, falling on a 7-5, 6-4 line to USF’s Ecaterina Vasenina in one of the most exciting matches of the day in the bracket. Bartenstein plays Denver’s top-flight player Sophia Bergner on Sunday in the third place match.

The final singles match played on the day for UM took place in the Silver Bracket by freshman Mills, suffering a tough 7-5, 6-3 setback to Allyn Mueller of USF. Mills will try and bounce back tomorrow in the third place match against Furman’s Jennifer Betts.

“I’m looking forward to tomorrow and seeing each girl go out there and compete for each and every point,” stated Thomsen.

Action continues back at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Sunday for the main draw and consolation finals of all six singles draws taking place with the first match scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Admission to the FSU Seminole Invitational is free.
