CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami held an event at the school’s UC Student Lounge on April 29, to celebrate Hurricane track and field star Murielle Ahoure’s Indoor 200-meter National Championship. The senior originally from the Ivory Coast was joined by UM students, faculty and staff at the celebratory reception.
“I’m very excited, this is really big,” said Ahoure. I can’t believe that everyone including the mascot and cheerleaders are here for me. This is really special and I’m very grateful.”
Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt opened the ceremony and thanked everyone for their attendance and support.
“At the U, we are known for being the best of the best. We are the best of the best in everything we do, from academics to athletics, said Hocutt. “In athletics, being the best is measured in national championships and that’s nothing new for us at the University of Miami.”
Ahoure won the NCAA National Title in the indoor 200-meter dash in College Station, Texas on March 13 with at time of 22.80 seconds. Ahoure became the seventh Hurricane to win a national title in program history.
Ahoure and the 14th-ranked Hurricanes will be back in action along with the men’s program at the UCF Twilight meet May 10 in Orlando.
