Murielle Ahoure Named South Region Athlete of the Year

NEW ORLEANS – The University of Miami `s Murielle Ahoure has been named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coached Association’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year for her performance during the 2009 indoor season.
Ahoure, won both the 60 and 200-meter conference title at the ACC Indoor Championships. She set the meet record with her qualifying run in the 200-meters, with a time of 23.16, only to break it again the next day in the finals at 23.14. For her efforts, Ahoure won the Atlantic Coast Conference Performer of the Year Award.
Earlier in the season, Ahoure broke Lauryn Williams’ 60-meter dash record with blistering time of 7.17, an effort that once held as the World’s fastest time this season. Her 60-meter time is the fastest collegiate time in the nation, while her 200-meter time ranks third.
Also, in the 200-meter dash, Ahoure ran the then fastest time in the world, winning the event in 23.14 seconds. The automatic time ranks second all-time at the University of Miami and at the time was the top-collegiate time of 2009.
The USTFCCCA selects the top men’s and women’s track athlete, field athlete, assistant coach and head coach for the nine regions in Division I indoor track and field.
The Bristow, Va. native will next compete at the NCAA National Indoor Championships, which will be held on the campus of Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, March 13-14.
