Cohen Named ACC Women's Tennis Player of the Week
March 10, 2009
Greensboro, N.C. – University of Miami sophomore Julia Cohen has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week with her defeat of back-to-back Top 5 opponents from a pair of Top 10 teams, as announced Tuesday morning from the ACC Office in Greensboro, N.C.
Cohen, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., is currently ranked 13th nationally in the latest Campbell’s/ITA singles poll. Last week, she completed a 3-0 week with a trio of wins coming against ACC foes from Boston College, No. 8 Georgia Tech and No. 9 Clemson, helping the sixth-ranked Miami Hurricanes to a 2-1 record on the campaign.
She began the week with a victory over Boston College’s Lana Krasnopolsky in straight-sets, only to come back to claim a three-set win over Georgia Tech’s Irina Falconi (5-7, 6-3, 6-1). Ranked No. 5 nationally, Falconi served as the highest-rated player defeated by Cohen, until a day later when she collected a straight-set upset of the nation’s top-ranked player from Clemson, Ani Mijacika (6-4, 6-1).
Cohen has won her last six matches – five vs. ranked opponents, including three against Top 10 players. Cohen is now 18-4 on the season, 12-2 on the spring slate.
In doubles play, Cohen teamed with partner and fellow sophomore Bianca Eichkorn to upset Clemson’s 26th-ranked pair of Josipa Bek and Ina Hadziselimovic at the No. 2 position.
All of Cohen’s top-10 wins this season have come on the road.
