Ennis, Texas – The seventh-ranked Baylor Bears (4-2) bounced back from back-to-back losses to collect a hard-fought, 4-2 victory over the 10th-ranked Miami Hurricanes (8-2) in a Top 10 showdown at the Ennis Indoor Courts in Ennis, Texas on Saturday evening. The match was played an hour-and-a-half away from the Baylor campus due to severe wind in the Waco area.

Baylor rebounded from back-to-back losses in the ITA National Indoor Team Tournament a week ago, with losses coming to Notre Dame and ACC opponent Virginia Tech. Meanwhile, Miami was looking for their second-straight victory over a Top 10 opponent–having downed previous No. 5 Stanford last Sunday afternoon in that same tournament.

Despite the effort of UM’s combination of Laura Vallverdu and Julia Cohen taking the win at the No. 1 doubles slot, 9-7, over Baylor’s nationally-ranked (No. 7) duo of Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi, the Hurricanes were just not able to capitalize off the early momentum.

Baylor’s team of Kasai Siwosz and Nina Secerbegovic collected the deciding doubles match at the third position, 9-8 (7-5), in a thrilling match over the `Canes Bianca Eichkorn and Gabriela Mejia.

In the singles matches, sophomore Julia Cohen (ranked No. 20) kick-started her engine with an emphatic 6-4, 7-5 straight-set win over the Bears’ No. 54 Csilla Borsanyi in the first position. However, the only other win for the Orange and Green would occur at the fourth spot with the help of sophomore Bianca Eichkorn (ranked No. 51) defeating 75th-ranked Lenka Broosova in three sets on scores of 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

Baylor collected their first win at the No. 6 singles spot where Nina Secerbegovic defeated Miami junior Claudia Wasilewski, 6-0, 6-2. They took a 3-1 advantage in the match after No. 26 Taylor Ormond defeated Laura Vallverdu–moving up to No. 34 in the Campbell’s/ITA Singles Rankings this week, in a straight-set affair (7-5, 6-4).

After UM cut into the lead at 3-2 with Eichkorn’s win, Baylor closed out the match with Jelena Stanivuk (No. 40) edging Michaela Kissell (No. 60) of Miami in a thrilling three-set shootout. Stanivuk collected the win on a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) line in the best match played on the evening.

The Hurricanes will look to rebound tomorrow when they travel to No. 21 TCU at 11 a.m. in Ft. Worth. Results will be available immediately following the match, as well as post-match news and up-to-date statistics for the Hurricanes.
