Murielle Ahoure Breaks 60m Record for Hurricanes
Jan. 17, 2009
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Miami track and field team completed its first meet of the 2009 season, and senior Murielle Ahoure made her Hurricane debut with a record-breaking performance in the 60-meter dash at the University of Kentucky’s Nutter Fieldhouse.
Ahoure, a senior transfer, broke Lauryn Williams’ 60-meter dash record with a first-place time of 7.17. The performance guarantees her a spot in the NCAA Indoor National Championships in College Station, Texas, March 13-14.
An All-American at George Mason, Ahoure also was named her conference’s performer of the year after winning both the 100 and 200-meters during the outdoor season.
“I knew Murielle was capable of running very fast, said Director of Track and Field Amy Deem. “But I was extremely pleased that she was able to put it all together for the first meet.”
For the men, junior transfer Mikese Morse reached a provisional mark with a third place distance of 7.56m (24-09.75) in the long jump. Last year, Morse was invited to the US Olympic Trials after earning All-American honors in the long jump at the University of South Florida.
Junior Kristy Whyte, who was named the ACC’s Performer of the Year during the outdoor season in 2008, set her personal-best in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.51. Whyte placed 12th in the 60-meter final while sophomore Tara Thomas reached the finals as well, finishing with a time of 7.69.
Returning All-American Ti’erra Brown hit a provisional mark with her fourth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.37.
With Ahoure running the opening leg of the 4×400 relay, followed by Brown, Tameka Jameson and Ena Leufroy, the team came just shy of a provisional time at 3:41.37.
“I’m excited to see that Ti’erra has begun the season where she left off last season,” added Deem. “As far as Mikese’s performance, it was nice to see him get the provisional mark. He is capable of improving and we will continue to get him more comfortable with the runway.”
Junior Deandra Doyley leapt to a third place finish in the long jump, reaching a mark of 5.81m (19-00.75). Freshman Brittni Finch, a native of Dallas, placed right behind Doyley, in fourth at 5.75m (18-10.50).
Sophomore Megan Novinger set her collegiate-best indoor mark, as she reached 1.66m (5-05.25) and tied for fourth in the high jump.
Tameka Jameson ran to a seventh-place result in the 400-meters with a time of 56.05. Ena Leufroy ran a 2:15.33 in the 800-meters for an eighth-place finish.
Senior distance runner, Andrew Chuplis, ran the mile in 4:26.15, earning a 15th-place finish.
The 400-meters featured five Hurricanes, junior Cory Nelms, sophomore Diego Rosado and freshmen Kieron Anthony, Evan Hadrick and David Kurht. Nelms was the first to cross the line at 50.42.
Nelms ran the opening leg of the men’s 4×400 relay. He was followed by freshman Evan Hadrick, junior Patrick O’Donnell and freshman Devon Hill. The team finished with a time of 3:25.91.
Miami returns to the track on Saturday, Jan. 24 when it travels to Gainesville, Fla. for the Tom Jones Invitational at the University of Florida.
