Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team travels to Ohio State this weekend for the annual OSU Invitational at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on December 5-7 in Columbus. The Hurricanes are one of 12 teams participating which includes Florida State and NC State out of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

While UM didn’t swim in last year’s OSU Invite, they had a couple of great achievements during last year’s meet in the diving portion of the event. Rueben Ross set a pool record in the 3-meter event and Brittany Viola followed by taking first in the platform event.

“I’m excited to see how we come out against some of the teams that are ranked within the top 25,” mentioned third-year head swimming coach for the Hurricanes Christie Shefchunas.

Miami hopes to improve upon their 8-4 overall record this weekend. Ohio State’s McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion is said to have some of the newest and best technologies, and is also known for fast times and record dives.

The `Canes will have an opportunity this weekend to face-off against ranked teams such as the University of Minnesota and Penn State. The meet begins on Friday, Dec. 5 and runs through Sunday. This is Miami’s first team competition since going 3-1 at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Nov. 15 in Atlanta.

In that meet, sophomore swimmer Tiffany Petzold nailed a top five time of 10:39.37 in the 1000 freestyle to start a string of top five times for the `Canes. Sophomore Annika Saarnak assisted by taking the top time in the 200 freestyle (1:51.62), while also taking the top mark in the 100 freestyle (52.02). In the 100 backstroke, it was senior Britta Boesing capturing a fifth place time (58.73) while Deidre Novotny (59.50) took seventh place, respectively.

In the 200 breaststroke, a pair of Hurricanes went second and third, respectively, as Dana Hatic (2:25.54) and Eason (2:25.68) took the marks.

This weekend’s meet will be the last of the fall season, before returning to action on January 10, 2009 when the Orange and Green hosts the Kansas Jayhawks and Central Connecticut State Blue Devils at the Norman A. Whitten Student Union Pool.
